Chapter Fifteen

Many days passed and Lucia heard nothing from L’amour. He did not appear at the castle and no one spoke of him or seemed to know where he was. She even visited his office in New York a few times but he was not there. She began to lose hope, and the despair, which had been kept at bay by his promise, started to creep up on her again.

After L’amour offered to organize a job for her in journalism, Lucia found that she was not partying as hard with the other vampires or drinking as much blood. With something to look forward to, her life took on new meaning, and she did not need to drown her sorrows as much. Raven and the others were not pleased at these changes, but Lucia did not care about them, and she found herself gravitating back towards Mariana. They began spending time together, and it gave her a sharp pang of guilt to realize just how lonely and isolated her friend had been while she was caught up with her own problems.

“I’m very glad you’re back to your old self,” said Mariana one afternoon as they strolled through the castle’s grounds. “I thought you were gone forever, that your human self had not been strong enough to survive, and that you truly had become one of them.”

“For a while there I really wanted to. Seeing Aiden and Jasmina together like that was almost more than I could take, and I didn’t care about anything or anyone. I was even planning on going hunting. ” She shuddered at the thought. “I came very close to being a true vampire, but then Drake L’amour offered to arrange a job for me and I saw that I could still do something with my life, that it wasn’t all hopeless.”

“Who would ever have believed that Drake L’amour would be the one to save you?”

“I know, I still don’t quite believe it myself. I wish he would hurry up, though, because I just want to get started. When I’m working it will be easier to stop drinking blood and hopefully I will win my soul back and be able to have a normal life again. Once upon a time I dreamed about a life just like the one we’re living, but now I see how empty it is compared to what I had. Even if Aiden didn’t love me as much as I thought he did, it doesn’t mean that I won’t ever find someone to share my life with. I just want to be human again.”

“That’s how Drake L’amour managed to steal our souls, he saw that we yearned for something different and he used it to trick us. He does have some redeeming qualities, though, which is more than I can say for most of the vampires around here. What’s the hold up with the job? I thought it would be easy to arrange with all his connections.”

“I have to meet his father first and convince him of my complete loyalty to the clan.
